Alastair Breward, Chief Operating Officer, Amadeus Capital Partners

Alastair Breward joined Amadeus in 2005 as Chief Operating Officer, with responsibility for compliance, finance, human resources, information technology and information services. He also supports Anne Glover, the chief executive, in fundraising and investor relations.

A lawyer by training, Alastair was a partner at Taylor Wessing, a London-based commercial law firm, and specialised in advising fast-growing technology and venture capital companies. He spent the earlier part of his career working in the IT industry as programmer, consultant and customer services manager.

He holds an SAB Diploma in Law from Sydney University and a BA in Economics and Philosophy from Oriel College, Oxford. He is a solicitor admitted to practice in England and Wales, and in New South Wales, Australia.

Amadeus invests across the technology spectrum in industries that include communications and networking hardware and software, media, e-commerce, computer hardware and software, plus the medtech and cleantech sectors. With £460m under management, Amadeus has active investments in around 40 companies at any time, across Europe and selectively in Israel.

Global businesses built by Amadeus include Cambridge Silicon Radio Limited, now CSR plc (LSE:CSR), the leading producer of single chip bluetooth radios for short range connections and Solexa Limited, the developer of next generation genetic analysis systems, merged into Illumina, Inc. (ILMN) to create the world-leader in gene-sequencing technology.

Janet Brooks, Managing Director, Monument Group

Monument Group was established in 1994 and is a leading independent placement agent with offices in Boston and London. Over the last 15 years the firm has helped its client raise more than $67bn for a range of alternative investment strategies ranging from buyouts to energy and real estate. Recent fund closes include the €2bn Altor Fund III and the $1bn Cerberus Institutional Partners International (Series One).

Janet joined Monument Group in 2007 and is based in the London office. Prior to this, Janet was a Director and board member of ECI Partners, a UK mid market buyout investor, with responsibility for the firm’s investor relations and fundraisings. During her 15 year tenure at ECI, Janet oversaw the successful fundraising of four institutional funds and also developed ECI’s firm-wide marketing strategies for deal flow, investor relations and general strategic direction. She is currently a member of the British Venture Capital Association’s Investor Relations Committee and has previously served in a similar capacity for the European Venture Capital Association.  She holds an MA from Cambridge University and an MBA from INSEAD.

Andrew Brown, Investment Consultant, Manager Research, Watson Wyatt

Andrew Brown joined Watson Wyatt in 2008 as an investment consultant focused on private equity research. He has seven years of private equity research experience, including working for Robbins and Associates, a financial and accounting advisory firm in Chicago. He helped research, create and manage alternative investment portfolios for ultra high-net-worth clients.

Prior to Watson Wyatt, Andrew received a M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. He also has an undergraduate degree at Northwestern University in Chicago and a M.Phil in historical studies from University of Cambridge.

John Campbell, Senior Partner, Campbell Lutyens

John Campbell is the senior partner of Campbell Lutyens which he co-founded in 1988. The firm’s team of 45 executives and advisers is based in London and New York. The firm provides financial advice to governments, institutions and fund managers with a singular focus on the private equity and infrastructure sectors. Its three activities comprise, firstly, strategic advice to major sector participants including governments and pension plans on all aspects of private equity and infrastructure. Secondly, Campbell Lutyens structures and intermediates the placement of private equity and infrastructure funds between the GPs and institutional investors. In the infrastructure field the firm has pioneered fund structures which incorporate partnership terms which are appropriate to the asset class and vehicles which deliver longer term access to assets. Thirdly, Campbell Lutyens is the leading European based firm advising on the sale and partnering of worldwide secondary portfolios of direct investments or limited partnership interests in the private equity and infrastructure classes.

John Campbell holds an MA in Economics from Cambridge University. He is a board member of the Pacific Pension Institute (www.pacificpension.org), which provides assistance to leading pension plans and other investors. John Campbell edited a book on the financing of infrastructure which was published in early 2009.

Stephen Cavell, Senior Partner, Graphite Capital

Stephen is responsible for fundraising and investor relations after having led and structured transactions on the investment team. He joined Graphite Capital in 1993, having previously worked in the corporate finance department of Baring Brothers and at Barclays Bank in the UK and France. He has law degrees from the Universities of Kent and Paris and an MBA with distinction from Warwick Business School.

 

Tatiana Chopova, Principal, AlpInvest Partners

AlpInvest is a global investment firm, dedicated to private equity, with offices in Amsterdam, London, New York and Hong Kong with approximately EUR 35 bn under management.

Tatiana is a Principal in the Fund Investments Team of AlpInvest Partners, with a special focus on European funds. She has been responsible for AlpInvest's private equity commitments to various funds since 2003 and she is a member of several advisory boards including 3i, KKR Europe, Gresham, Segulah, Investitori Associati, Astorg, Advent CEE, B&S, Baring Vostok, Phoenix, and Palamon.

Tatiana joined AlpInvest from McKinsey & Company, where she worked from offices in Brussels and Moscow advising multinational companies on strategic and financial issues. Previously, Tatiana worked at Credit Suisse First Boston, based in London. She received a B.Sc. in Economics, with first class honours from the University of Bristol (United Kingdom) and an MBA from INSEAD, Fontainebleau (France).

Annabelle de Saint-Quentin, Chief Financial Officer, Tempo Capital Partners

Annabelle is the Chief Financial Officer of Tempo Capital Partners LLP. Prior to joining Tempo in 2006, Annabelle was the finance director of Zouk Ventures Ltd, a London-based pan-european venture capital firm. Annabelle joined zouk in 2000 from PricewaterhouseCoopers in the US where, as a senior manager in the audit and business advisory practice in New York and Miami, she led audit and due diligence projects in the financial services industry. Annabelle started her career as an auditor with Coopers & Lybrand in Paris. She graduated from ESCP-EAP business school, and is a Chartered Accountant.

Richard Green, Chairman, August Equity

Richard co-founded August Equity in 2001. He is now chairman of the firm and chairs its Investment Committee.

He previously spent 13 years at Kleinwort Benson (latterly Dresdner Kleinwort Benson) where he started his private equity career. Prior to that, Richard spent five years with Coopers and Lybrand where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant.

Richard has a BA in Accountancy and is a member of the council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (“ICAEW”) and is a vice chairman of the Corporate Finance Faculty of the ICAEW. Richard is a past chairman of the British Venture Capital Association and still represents August Equity on the BVCA’s Mid Market Committee. Richard is a regular speaker at private equity events and conferences.

Janusz Heath, Managing Director, Capital Dynamics

Janusz Heath is a Managing Director at Capital Dynamics heading its Asset Management division.

Janusz is a member of Capital Dynamics Executive and Product Committees. He has over 25 years of private equity, corporate finance and industry experience. Prior to joining Capital Dynamics he was head of Central & Eastern European Private Equity at Allianz Specialized Investments (formerly Dresdner Kleinwort Capital), having previously been deputy chairman and managing director of PTP-Kleinwort Benson. He has also been chief executive of a UK public company. He was a member of the Wilton Park Advisory Council (a FCO agency), is a non-executive director and trustee of HCT Group (a UK social enterprise), a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and holds an MBA from the University of Aston.

Brenlen Jinkens, Managing Director, Cogent Partners

Brenlen Jinkens is Managing Director of the firm’s London office and is responsible for Cogent’s European strategy and business development.  He is also the Head of Research, Cogent’s fund monitoring and due diligence arm.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr Jinkens was an Executive Director of Lehman Brothers Europe, where he covered financial services technology businesses in the UK, Germany and Scandinavia.  Mr Jinkens also started an online financial services business, and worked for five years in the financial services practice of McKinsey & Company in Paris and London.  He has nearly 20 years of experience advising financial services companies and other entities.

Mr Jinkens has an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and a BA from Princeton University.

Julian Knott, Partner, Cognetas

Julian joined the business which is now Cognetas in 1987, initially as an investment professional. He was also involved in establishing and running investment activities in USA and the Far East.  He now runs investor relations and co-ordinates the Operating Partners programme. Julian was previously at Citibank where he was a Vice President in the leveraged buy out department. Prior to this, Julian spent eight years with ANZ Bank in London and Japan. Mostly in corporate banking, he also ran a trade finance subsidiary before eventually selling it. Julian has a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from London University and an MBA from Cranfield Business School. Outside work, Julian enjoys playing golf and travelling.

Al Loehnis, Business Development Director, Investis

Al is a founding director of Investis, with responsibility for business development, including marketing and the Investis partnership programme. Prior to Investis, Al worked as an equity analyst in the City, most recently at Credit Suisse First Boston where he was a Vice-President in the Food Producers research team. He has extensive experience of investor relations and corporate communications issues and sits on the board of the Investor Relations Society.

Investis are Europe’s leading provider of corporate websites and online corporate communications services.  The company now works with more than 1,000 clients in over 20 countries worldwide, from the smallest AIM companies to more than 50% of the FTSE 100 and 30% of the FTSE Eurofirst 100. Mark O'Hare, Founder and Managing Director, Preqin

Mark O’Hare studied Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Cambridge University, where he graduated with First Class Honours and was awarded the Stokes Prize in Mathematics. He represented his college 1st VIII in rowing. Subsequent to this he studied Finance at London Business School.

Mark’s initial career was as a Manager with Boston Consulting Group, where he advised clients in Europe, the US and Africa, across several industries including financial services, healthcare, retail, industrial and consumer products. Following BCG he founded Goodall Alexander O’Hare & Co, an independent strategy consulting firm.

In 1993 he founded Citywatch, the UK’s shareholder  information service, which was acquired by Reuters in 1998, and now provides a global service on the ownership of listed equities. In 2002 he founded Preqin, the alternative assets information service which provides extensive research, data and consultancy services on private equity, private real estate, infrastructure and hedge funds. Preqin is an independent business with 58 staff providing market-leading online and hard copy data services to many of the world’s leading institutional investors, money managers and advisors. Preqin’s online databases are used by over 2,000 customers in 72 countries worldwide. Over 30,000 industry professionals receive Preqin’s newsletters and research reports every month. Preqin tracks fund returns, fund raising information, fund terms and conditions, profiles of the GPs running the funds, and the LPs investing in them.

Guy Paisner, Investor Relations, Doughty Hanson

Guy Paisner is a London-based member of Doughty Hanson’s investor relations team and works across the group’s fund programmes in private equity, real estate and venture capital. He also focuses on the development of initiatives in the ESG arena and sits on the private equity steering committee for the UNPRI.
He joined Doughty Hanson from Altius Associates where he was partner responsible for investor relations in Europe.  Guy was formerly the launch editor of Private Equity News and spent eight years covering the asset class as a journalist.
He graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in Social and Political Sciences.
Doughty Hanson focuses on three asset classes, investing from fund programmes in private equity, real estate and technology venture capital.

Elvire Perrin, Partner, Head of Research, Altius Associates

Elvire Perrin is a Partner and Head of Research. She is a member of Altius’ Investment Policy Committee and Investment Selection Committee and oversees the overall management of client’s portfolios. She is also responsible for ensuring the due diligence process is optimal. Upon joining Altius, Ms. Perrin was responsible for coverage of the private equity market in France, Belgium, Spain and Italy and Switzerland. During this time, she was instrumental in the research effort that led to Altius identifying the potential risks associated with the technology venture market in 2000, subsequently resulting in the firm limiting considerably its investments in venture funds and thereby avoiding the dramatic setbacks in that market. Ms. Perrin also developed Altius’ approach to peer group analysis of general partners. This approach is a key aspect of Altius’ Research and Investment Process today. Ms. Perrin joined the firm in 1999, and has ten years of private equity experience.

Prior to joining Altius, Ms. Perrin held positions in the New York and Paris offices of the Invest in France Agency, and DATAR (the French Regional Planning Commission).  She has a BSc (Hons) in Economic Science from Sorbonne University; an MSc (Hons) in International Economics from Nanterre University, and an MSc (Hons) in Public Management from Dauphine University.  Ms. Perrin speaks French, English, Spanish and Italian.

Sarah Rajani, Head of Investor Relations, New Look

Sarah Rajani is Head of Investor Relations at New Look Retailers Ltd., responsible for the company's external reputation and all investor relations activities.  New Look was acquired by Apax Partners and Permira in 2004 and today is a leading branded value fashion retailer in the UK, with a 5.3% share of the Womenswear clothing, footwear and accessories market.

Previously, Ms. Rajani was Global Vice President of Strategic Development and Investor Relations at Samsonite Ltd., responsible for developing and implementing Samsonite's investor relations strategy, incorporating the preparation of an IPO on the London Stock Exchange and the successful fielding of a dual track sale process, culminating in the sale of the business to CVC Capital Partners in 2007. Ms. Rajani constructed and led the investment case and scenario analysis for capital restructuring activities and the sale of the Company, together with subsequent syndication efforts and financial restructuring activities in 2008.  As Vice President of Strategic Development, Ms. Rajani was also responsible for global strategic and financial planning activities and performed an M&A advisory role to the Board of Directors, with responsibility for identification, presentation and execution of new market opportunities.

Prior to Samsonite, Ms. Rajani spent three years at DrKW as a Vice President equity analyst with coverage of the Pan European General Retail and Luxury Goods sectors, and worked five years previously at Citigroup.

Ms. Rajani holds an MA Honours degree from Emmanuel College, Cambridge University in Mathematics and Economics and is a CFA charterholder.

Lynsey Register, Investment Manager, Hermes Private Equity

Lynsey joined Hermes in January 2009 and is responsible for leading the due diligence process analysing prospective managers making recommendations to the investment committee. She manages a number of Asian and European general partner relationships and holds a number of advisory board positions. Prior to joining Hermes, Lynsey spent four years working for private equity fund of funds, firstly with BlackRock and then Kedge Capital. Lynsey is a Chartered Accountant, holds the Investment Management Certificate and is a member of the CFA Society of the UK. Lynsey graduated with a BSc in Accounting and Financial Management from Sheffield University.

Hermes Private Equity has been investing globally in primary partnerships since the 1990s, and has established itself as one of the leading investors with over £1.5 billion assets under management in private equity funds and £400 million assets under management in infrastructure funds and direct deals. Hermes Private Equity is owned by Hermes Fund Managers, one of the most established and largest institutional fund managers in the UK with over £20 billion under management (as at 30th June 2009). Hermes is owned by its largest investor, the BT Pension Scheme.

Grant Roberts, Partner, Richmond Park Partners

Grant is a seasoned private equity professional with over 12 year’s experience.  Prior to joining Richmond Park Partners LLP he co-founded Newgate CSP, a specialist private equity advisory and investment business, having previously been a senior professional at 3i.

He has advised fund managers and institutional investors on many aspects of their private equity activities, including raising funds, secondary transactions and M&A / strategic advisory. In addition he is experienced in direct corporate investment and divestment.

Grant has a Masters in Applied Finance and Investment, a Bachelor of Commerce and is a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australia.

Erin Sarret, Vice President, Morgan Stanley Investment Management

Erin is a portfolio specialist for Alternative Investment Partners and based in London.  Erin joined Morgan Stanley in 2009 and has 8 years of experience in private equity.  Prior to her current role, Erin was a Director with Wilshire Private Markets in Amsterdam and also with Access Capital Partners in Paris. Trained as a lawyer at McGeorge School of Law (JD) after undergraduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley (double BA), she is a member of the State Bar of California. Erin began her professional life as a litigator representing employers and their insurance companies before moving to Europe. As a dual French and American national, Erin is bilingual in French and English.

Buchan Scott, Partner, Investor Relations, Duke Street

Buchan Scott: Partner, joined Duke Street in 1999 from industry where he had worked on the flotation and strategic development of a private equity owned business technology services provider. Prior to that Buchan worked for a leading city firm of solicitors specialising in corporate finance and transactional work including private equity. Buchan has a degree in law from Durham University, an MBA from Strathclyde University and is a member of the BVCA Regulatory Committee. Duke Street has been active in private equity since the late 1980s during which time it has raised 6 mid market buy out funds. Buchan is a member of the investment committee and as partner responsible for fundraising has been responsible for the raising of its last two funds, the last a € 1 billion mid market buy out fund.

Guy Semmens, Partner, Argos Soditic

Guy Semmens

Guy Semmens joined Argos Soditic in 1996 and heads the Swiss operations based in Geneva. Investments which he has led include cable machinery business Maillefer, and chocolate wafer brand Kagi in Switzerland, and flame retardant business Kermel, and fine chemicals group Axyntis in France. In addition to his primary investment role, he is also responsible for investor relations and fund raising for the Argos Soditic Group.

Before joining Argos Soditic, Guy Semmens was part of the management buy-out group at Clifford Chance, the international law firm. He was also a member the EVCA working committee that formulated the "Reporting and Valuation Guidelines" for private equity firms.

Ian Simpson, Partner, Amala Partners

Amala provides strategic advice to private equity firms, focusing on capital raising, brand development and marketing and organisational change.  Mr Simpson co-founded Amala in 2008, having spent the previous 15 years as a Director of Helix Associates, a private equity placement agent, which he co-founded in 1993.  Previously, Mr Simpson was a Director of Berkeley Govett (UK) Limited and before that an Associate Director in the Global Private Equity Placement Group at Continental Bank NA.  Over the course of the last 20 years, Mr Simpson has advised and raised capital for a broad range of private equity firms including Graphite Capital, Exponent Private Equity, Bridgepoint Capital, GB Deutschland, Madison Dearborn, Piper Private Equity and Quadriga Capital among others.  Mr Simpson has an MA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University.

Steve Tibble, Communications Director, Cinven

Steve joined Cinven in 2001 as Communications Director. He has particular responsibility for the firm’s external reputation and for internal communications.

Steve started his career in academic research before moving into the research and planning discipline within corporate communications. He was Board Director of research and planning at Valin Pollen, where he worked for eight years, and was Board Director of planning at Gavin Anderson.

Steve holds a degree in History from Cambridge University and has a doctorate in Medieval Politics.

Hannah Tobin, Vice President, HarbourVest Partners

Hannah Tobin joined HarbourVest in Boston in 1996 and relocated to HarbourVest's London-based subsidiary in 2001. She became a vice president in 2003. She currently focuses on relationships with European investors and non-U.S. partnership investments. Her prior experience includes assisting in the management of her family's restaurant business in Dublin, Ireland. Hannah received a BA (with honors) in Economics from University College Dublin in 1992, where she has also pursued development studies at the post-graduate level. Hannah speaks French.

Annette Wilson, Investor Relations Director, Palamon Capital Partners

Annette Wilson is Investor Relations Director of Palamon Capital Partners, one of Europe’s leading mid-market Private Equity firms. She joined Palamon in 1999, first serving as the firm’s founding Chief Financial Officer before taking on the role of Investor Relations Director in 2005. She has extensive general and financial management experience built up over her twenty-five-year corporate business career principally at PricewaterhouseCoopers and Sedgwick Group plc.
